Are you succeeding?

Roombas are robotic vacuum cleaners.  The roll around the floor vacuuming your room while you’re away.  They are successful because they keep moving after they encounter an obstacle.  They If they didn’t do this, they’d just suck.  They are successful because they succeed.

Most ladders have many rungs.  We succeed from rung to rung to make to the top of the ladder.   The word “Succeed” is derived from the latin,  succedere: to go up or follow after.

I usually think about achieving a specific, desired final outcome when I think about succeeding.  I judge myself for not succeeding because I haven’t gotten to the endpoint when I wanted to.  I tend to not credit myself with the steps toward the goal.  I kick myself in the ass for not getting there yet.

My thinking is wrong.

Succeeding is following through, taking the step to go up to the next rung, and then following-through again.  Succeeding is putting one foot in front of the other.  And doing it consistently.

It’s like the game Chutes and Ladders.  Some steps will lead us closer to our destination.  Some further away.  Sometimes we’ll fall down a chute and have to make up ground.  Succeeding means continuing to take the steps.

It’s a lot easier to become successful when you know what it is to succeed.

Are you succeeding?
