Are you connected enough?

    It seems the more people we connect with the less there is of us to go around.  I start with the default answer of 'No' when a friend asks me to do something.  I check my calendar.  Then I offer a date 3 weeks in the future. Am I free now?   Yes.   But I have a false notion of obligation.  I feel so little control over my time that I hoard the time I can control.  I then squander the time I hoarded instead of spending it wisely ... by saying yes to my friend. What do you want to leave behind?

Let's stick with the Lego theme.  I've written about building ideas ... ideas are the Lego blocks.  Putting the blocks together is the execution. Many of us get caught in the idea trap.  Accumulating ideas like a hoarder accumulates newspapers, cats and Elvis plates.  The ideas pile up until we're overwhelmed by them.  They're everywhere!  You can barely walk in your brain because there are so many ideas piled up and laying around. Follow through

Want to see a quarterback throw a bad pass?  Mess with his follow through.  How about a golfer screw up a shot?  Mess with her follow through.  A baller miss a jumper?  Mess with their follow through. Some companies charge money to perform a service they once performed for free.   Other companies create new offerings that cost more but provide value in return. Both seek the customers money.  That's what businesses do. One values the customer. Some teams, departments or individuals create processes to service their customers (inside and outside the company). They make their customers do more work to get the same result. Has evolution evolved?

Life started on this planet as single cell organisms. At some point they connected, unified and evolved.  Adaptation created diversity.  Over time, consolidation would favor the stronger adapters. Corporations are people (per the U.S. Supreme Court).   People are single cell organisms. We connect, unify and emerge as corporate bodies. Like a moth to a flame.

I rushed to the lamp to turn it off.  I had heard a zap.  I smelled something burn.  I looked around.  I saw smoke waft from my lamp.  It was a 6 foot tall torchiere (Think a tall skinny lamp).  The lamp had a halogen bulb.  It burned white hot.  I tilted it so I could see what happened.  There is was.  A charred moth.  I turned the lamp back on.  The moth finished burning.  The smell went away.  Once and a while, I'd hear the zap.  I'd look for the plume of smoke.  I'd smirk and shake my head. … [Read more...]
